Pepper Spray – What is it?

Police Officers usually go through Pepper Spray training while in the Police Academy. The training is required before they can carry Pepper Spray themselves. It brought back memories and reminded me that every new Police Officer Recruit must be subjected to the effects of pepper spray as part of their academy training. It isn’t just Police Officers who undergo this Pepper Spray training but also Military Police Officer Trainees as well.

Pepper spray is also known as Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray and is a chemical compound based on the resin of one of the hottest peppers in the world – cayenne pepper. Pepper Spray is used by police officers for riot control/crowd control as well as self-defense when subduing an unarmed combative subject. Pepper Spray irritates the eyes, causes tears, and inflames the mucous membranes. Other side effects include intense pain and even temporary blindness from eyes being forced shut.

Why Do Police Officers Use Pepper Spray?

 

There are two main reasons why police officers and military police officers undergo training for defensive sprays. The first reason is to give them first-hand experience on the effectiveness of Pepper Spray. The second reason is to learn how to fight through the effects of Pepper Spray during any possible cross-contamination exposure when taking a combative subject into custody.

I remember the feeling after being Pepper Sprayed. There’s really no words to describe it. It was uncomfortable and painful, but a definitely learning experience.
